Hydropower is one of the oldest sources of human energy used almost 5000 years ago. Today, hydroelectricity generates more electricity than nuclear energy worldwide, although only one fifth of the potential is used. Power from water is one of the most sustainable sources of renewable energy. Especially if it is implemented with small, decentralized systems, as is the case with MechMatics turbines.

As a Thumb Rule
Electric Power Generated = Head x Flow x Gravity x 0.6
where
Power in Watts, Head in meters, Flow in liters per second,
Gravity in m/s² and 0.6 factor account for 60% overall system efficiency.

The unit is designed to show students how an impulse turbine works and test its performance. The turbine power is adjusted by means of the nozzle cross-section. The experimental unit consists of the Pelton wheel, a needle nozzle used as a control device (control flow rate), a rope brake dynamometer for loading the turbine, and a housing with a transparent front panel. The transparent cover enables you to observe the water flow and the wheel movement during operation.
The pressure at the turbine inlet is recorded with a pressure gauge. A spring balance to measure brake power and a digital RPM indicator are attached to the wheel shaft. Thus, the mechanical power output of the turbine can be determined. Flow rate measurements are provided by orifice meters.
Specifications:
1. Pelton Wheel: 300 mm diameter with 18 buckets.2. Sump tank capacity: 200 liters, high-grade plastic3. Flow rate measurement: Orifice meter with Burdon-type pressure gauge4. Pump: Monoblock type, 4 liters/sec. Head 20 mtrs; Motor 5 HP5. Piping with necessary Valves and Fittings6. Digital RPM Indicator7. Detailed Technical Manual and On-site Training
